How to Use the TIP trace Utility - IBM Hosts

  1. Download the TIP Trace Utility, tip.zip.
  2. Unzip the TIP Trace Utility.
  3. Copy the tip.exe file to a new or existing folder on your PC.
  4. Open a Command Prompt and go to the directory containing tip.exe.
  5. Type the following command line:

NOTE: This example assumes that you placed tip.exe in the following location: C:\TIP)

C:\TIP>tip /asbridge /ebcdic /serverbridgeaddress 12.6.96.247:23 /listenbridgeport 23 /rec tiptrace.tip

    Where...
      /serverbridgeaddress = the IP address and port of your host
      /listenbridgeport = to the listening port that TIP is listening on (usually 23)
      /record = the name of the trace file you wish to create, ending in .tip

NOTE: The TIP option names can be abbreviated as follows:

C:\TIP>tip /asb /eb /serverb 12.6.96.247:23 /listenb 23 /rec tiptrace.tip

  1. Launch your emulator and configure it to connect to 127.0.0.1 port 23.
  2. Connect your emulator to the host, log on and navigate to the place where the problem or particular behavior occurs.
  3. Log off the host, then disconnect the emulator from the host.
  4. Do a CTRL-C to stop the tip trace.
  5. Look in your TIP folder and verify that the trace file was created.
  6. View the trace with Notepad to verify that the trace has data.
  7. Email the trace file to the person who requested the trace.
